Diane Vines

Diane Vines, a mental health therapist, moved to the Coachella Valley in 2016 after having experience in Los Angeles with the SMART Family and Friends meetings.  She learned there were no SMART meetings in the Valley even though there are over 2,500+ face-to-face meetings and 28 online meetings Worldwide each week.  She decided to train to be a SMART Recovery and Family and Friends facilitator.  She started a Family and Friends meeting but soon learned that there were no SMART Recovery meetings in the Valley and soon after the Beacon Foundation was born.

Suzy Weeks

As a Board Member of the Beacon Foundation, I look at this as an opportunity to give back, to encourage and to support those individuals who are working towards giving up their addictive behaviors.

Using my journalism background and fundraising experience, as well as training in Crisis Response, I hope to add value to the Board.  The SMART Recovery program has been there for me with emotional support and practical, everyday strategies that are so helpful in recovery.

Since my retirement, I have participated as a significant fundraiser and donor for Kate Booth House, a safe shelter providing comfort, education, and training for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence.

As well, I have trained and participated as a Crisis Responder for Kids Help Phone – a texting platform, providing instant communication and guidance for youth in need.

Personally, I have had hands-on experience in dealing with crises, assisting family members with their addictive behavior, and recovery.  This has given me an opportunity to use the skills learned in Crisis Response training, as well as making excellent use of the 4-Point Program offered in the SMART Recovery and Friends and Family workbooks.
